Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of
marginalized populations?
The field of human services provides meaningful work. What you do has a
purpose, and you know it directly impacts and contributes to an individual’s
well-being while supporting the development of more inclusive communities which
benefit everyone.
Calgary Alternative Support Services (CASS) recognizes that the people we
employ are our single greatest asset. We endeavour to recruit and mentor human
service professionals with talent and commitment for disability advocacy and
community engagement.

Support Home Provider (SHP)
A Support Home is a support situation in which a client shares a home with
their support person (family or individual), the Support Home Provider (SHP).
The client may live in a separate space in the home or share the same living
space with the SHP. The SHP generally provides support in all activities of
daily living. This includes, but is not limited to, activities such as laundry,
housekeeping, making and attending medical appointments, administering
medications, planning and preparing healthy meals, budgeting, and recreation
and leisure.
The supports that SHPs are providing typically occur in the mornings,
evenings and weekends, as clients may have a day program, employment, or
scheduled activities to attend during the day. However, where this is not the
case, the SHP may be responsible for providing support during the day as well.
A SHP is classified as a sub-contractor. The sub-contractor is not an
employee and therefore does not receive the same benefits as CASS employees,
such as vacation time, health benefits or employment insurance contributions.
This form of support is considered tax free by the federal and provincial
governments, and is not subject to CPP or EI contributions. However, the SHP
will receive a T5007 tax form each year and must still declare their income.
SHPs provide support to clients in their homes based on the following
attributes - education, availability, suitability and level of expertise with
specific support requirements - as well as, the safety and suitability of the
physical home and area of the city.
